At Parken Zoo, we offer all or parts of courses in the Nature Management Programme. We mainly focus on elements that can be difficult to perform in the regular school environment.
By using the local environment we have here in the zoo, students get their own, real experiences and learn in more ways than just by listening.
We also offer customised courses that consist of elements from several courses if you want to visit us for several days. For example, you can choose a three-day course combining different elements such as environmental enrichment, enclosure design, reptiles, ethology, evolution, habitat adaptation or systematics.
In addition to training, it is also possible to book 6-bed cabins at our campsite as well as meals such as breakfast, coffee, lunch and dinner. The camping cabins are fully equipped, for those who prefer to cook themselves.
We are aimed at all year groups, from pre-school to university. If you are a primary school teacher in Eskilstuna Municipality, don't miss our free inspiration days with Eco Friends. Read more and book at http://ecofriends.se/
INTERNSHIP AT A ZOO
Preparatory practical learning at a zoo
A course at Parken Zoo aimed at preparing the student for future internships, APL periods or apprenticeships. The training takes place in groups and is mostly practical with guidance from zoo teachers and animal keepers. The course is divided into guided tours of the zoo, briefings and practical elements where students get to try out different tasks and various commonly used tools.
Internship at a zoo is based on the content of the course Animals - specialisation, 100 points with a focus on zoos. It is also possible to base the content on other courses within the subject ANIMALS, for example Animal Husbandry 100 points.
ANIMAL WELFARE
The course covers activation, behavioural patterns, enclosure design and enclosure layout in order to provide stimulation of the animals' natural behaviours and promote animal welfare. The course is based on the content of the subject ANIMALS and the courses Zoo Animals 1 and Zoo Animals 2
EVOLUTION AND ECOLOGY
Included in the subject Biology, course Biology 1.
In this course, students gain in-depth knowledge of evolution and its mechanisms, such as natural selection and sexual selection. We look at how animals have adapted to the environment they live in, both physiologically and behaviourally, using the zoo's material of skeletons, skulls and live animals. We also go through a basic systematics by looking at the main groups of the animal kingdom and their family trees. We also have the opportunity to weave in ecology learning objectives by teaching about local and global sustainable development and biodiversity, which we work a lot with in the park.
CONSERVATION BIOLOGY, 100P
Included in the subject Biology - Nature Use, the course Conservation Biology.
We offer parts of the course conservation biology that deals with endangered plant and animal species, biotopes, biodiversity and methods to conserve it, as well as conservation work in zoos. The course also covers the regulatory system for endangered species, the relevant authorities and organisations, and ethical considerations in conservation work. Please note that we are not able to offer the part on practical species inventory in different biotopes.
ANIMAL BIOLOGY, 100P
Included in the subject Biology - Wildlife, course Animal Biology.
Within the Animal Biology course, we offer all the key content regarding ethology and systematics, anatomy and physiology. In ethology, students gain basic knowledge of the natural behaviour of animals and have the opportunity to conduct behavioural studies on a variety of species in different environments. We also talk about how domestication has affected animal species both physiologically and behaviourally. In Systematics, Anatomy and Physiology, we look at skeletons, skulls, hides and even living animals, to understand animal adaptations and evolution.
ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, 100P
Included in the subject Animals, course Animal Husbandry.
The content of the animal husbandry course is offered by us in the form of APL, work-based learning. Most of our 3-5 week APL placements are offered to schools with which we have existing agreements. However, sometimes there are vacancies so please do not hesitate to contact zooskolan@parkenzoo.se. However, we do not offer traineeships directly to individual students; this contact is made via the school's APL manager. If you are a student interested in doing an internship with us, please contact the school's APL coordinator.
ZOO ANIMALS 1 AND 2
Included in the subject Zoo Animals, course Zoo Animals 1 and 2.
We offer full or partial courses on zoo animals, covering everything from different species in the zoo world, ethology, feed, infection control and hygiene to laws and regulations. Theory is interspersed with practical work on animal care and handling, among other things.
PETS 1 AND 2
Included in the subject Animals, course Companion Animals 1 and 2.
In the Pet Animals 1 and 2 course, we alternate theory with practice in our domestic animal department where we have various reptiles, ungulates, rodents, hard animals, insects and predators. We offer both the more basic parts but also specialisations such as reproduction and breeding, environmental enrichment, feed calculation and killing and handling of dead animals.
ANIMAL CARE IN ANIMAL HEALTH 1 AND 2
Part of the Animal Care topic in Animal Health Care.
We offer parts of the courses Animal Care in Animal Health and Disease1 and 2. Within the courses, we can mainly offer lectures and demonstrations on hygiene and infection control, but we also have opportunities for several course elements if it suits our veterinarian. For requests contact zooskolan@parkenzoo.se for more information.
GYMNASIA WORK
The students who have APL with us have the opportunity to do their high school work in the zoo.
