Considered one of the most beautiful turtles in the world, the hawksbill is also one of the most endangered. It is captured and
are killed for their beautiful shell but also for eating them. In China, people pay a lot for ray turtles as they are also considered
aphrodisiac and is said to promote love life. In addition, widespread pet trade has contributed to the species' drastic decline in
nature.
The zoo's zoologist is the coordinator for the species and the zoo participates in the European Breeding Programme (EEP) for the conservation of the species.
