Poison dart frogs can be recognised by their bright colours. Their skin secretes a toxic secretion that acts as a defence against predators. The poison has traditionally been used by Indians in South America to poison arrows when hunting, which is why they are called poison dart frogs. The toxicity is determined by the frog's diet and in the wild they mainly eat ants.
