The Brahma is a large, heavy and calm breed of chicken that today is mainly used as a pet and show bird. The Brahma is a breed that was bred in the USA in the second half of the 19th century. It is believed to have originated in the Brahmaputra River region of India, but there is also a theory that they originally came from China. Their origins are not entirely clear but it is thought that they are closely related to the Asian jungle fowl (Gallus Gigantus) and the Cochin breed of chicken.
The hens lay sand-coloured eggs weighing about 55g, they are happy to incubate chicks, but sometimes an egg is crushed by the weight of the hen.
Brahma cockerels are about 75 cm tall and have a slightly more subdued crowing behaviour than many other chicken breeds.
You can find our Brahma hens in the Little Zoo where you can also learn more about our domestic animals.
