Axolotls can regenerate their legs and arms if they happen to be injured. Entire limbs can be regenerated, as can parts of the spinal cord and brain. They spend their entire lives in the larval stage and never metamorphose into salamanders. Therefore, they reproduce like larvae – meaning they become sexually mature before they are fully developed. This is called neoteny.
The only place they can be found in the wild is Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. Threats include pollution, the disappearance of more and more of the lake, and invasive species (species that do not naturally live there) eating them and their prey. They are now a critically endangered species, and it is believed that only about a hundred individuals remain in the lake.
In the summer of 2016, you can find Parken Zoo's axolotls outside Amazoonas.
