Zoo school & educational programmes

At Parken Zoo, learning takes place in a unique environment where we have moved the classroom to the centre of the park close to animals and nature. We offer a number of exciting and educational options that are adapted for everything from children in preschool all the way up to students at college and university. Inspiration, commitment, empathy and faith in the future are important words that permeate the programmes at Parken Zoo.

Park Zoo in your classroom

But wait a minute? You can't bring a flamingo into the classroom, can you?

Well, with our digital education hour, anything is possible. One of our zoo teachers teaches in the video conference platform ”teams” from Parken Zoo and you sit in your regular classroom at school (if your school uses another video conference platform, it can usually be solved in a smooth way).

We can teach from pretty much anywhere in the park, but a common learning environment we use is our stunning environments where we have the chance to see a variety of exciting animals in the background, including tigers, turtles and/or primates.

The lesson is mainly aimed at preschool and primary school, but can be adapted if there are special requests.

LINK TO THE CURRICULUM

This digital lesson can be linked to the curriculum for grades 1-3, for grades 4-6 and 7-9 through the following points.

Biology grades 1-3

We divide the animals in the park into groups, look at their food and think about why the animals look the way they do.

  • Animal and plant life cycles and adaptations to different seasons.
  • Animals and plants in the local environment and how they can be sorted, grouped and identified to species and names of some common species.
  • Simple food chains that describe the relationships between different organisms in ecosystems.

Biology grades 4-6

Option 1: We focus on our vital ecosystem services and talk about our responsibilities in nature.

  • Human dependence on and impact on nature and what this means for sustainable development. Ecosystem services, such as decomposition, pollination and purification of water and air.
  • Nature as a resource for recreation and experiences and what responsibility we have when we use it.

Option 2: We focus on the different adaptations of animal species and consider the similarities and differences between them.

  • Evolution of life and adaptations of organisms to different habitats
  • How animals, plants and other organisms can be identified, sorted and grouped

Biology Year 7-9

Option 1: Sustainable development and ecosystem services.

  • Human impact on nature locally and globally. Opportunities for consumers and citizens to contribute to sustainable development.
  • Ecosystem energy flow and matter cycling. Photosynthesis, combustion and other ecosystem services.

Option 2: Biodiversity and the ecosystems around us.

  • Biodiversity and its benefits and threats Social discussions on biodiversity, for example in the context of forestry and hunting.
  • Local ecosystems and how they can be studied from an ecological perspective. The relationships between populations and available resources in ecosystems. Local ecosystems in comparison with regional or global ecosystems.

Option 3: Evolution and development of animal species.

  • Scientific theories on the origin of life. The development and diversity of life based on the theory of evolution.
  • How organisms are identified, sorted and grouped based on relationships and evolution.
