Today is Biodiversity Day, which aims to raise awareness of the conservation of all the wonderful species we have on Earth. No one knows exactly how many species there are, but one estimate suggests there could be around 8 million species, of which nearly 30 % are threatened with extinction.
Here at Parken Zoo, we are home to 70 different species, the majority of which are endangered wild animals and are included in some form of conservation project. All species are important and play their own part in the ecosystem. If a species in a food chain disappears or its numbers decrease, it can have serious consequences for an entire ecosystem. This is often referred to as cascade effects.
Here we recommend a film (English spoken) that tells the story of cascade effects and how an entire ecosystem was transformed when wolves disappeared and were later reintroduced to Yellowstone, in the USA.
