Last weekend, we lost one of the zoo's older residents, our male lion Kaya.
Kaya, who was born in 1999 at Dudley Zoo, has lived at Parken Zoo since 2003. A couple of weeks ago, he became unwell and after the vet took samples and examined him, the decision was made to put him down. The post-mortem showed, among other things, a large number of tumours on his liver and intestines, and changes to his kidneys, which are likely due to his advanced age.
Kaya is missed by us and we are grateful for the time he had and the offspring he has left behind. The Asiatic lion is highly endangered and it is estimated that there are around 350 individuals remaining in one area of India.
